Old-tech outdoor cinema screen receives new tech face-lift

When Christie Systems Group was contracted by Regal Entertainment Group to update its old screens, the company teamed up with Large Screen Displays to manufacture a custom rear-screen and rear-mount system.

Regal’s West Covina Stadium 18 in West Covina, CA, updated its old technology – 16 outdoor screens – with a single new technology screen that features a 16.5ft diagonal, HD format, 16:9 screen by Large Screen Displays.

According to Large Screen Displays COO Randy Pagnan, the challenge of this project was transporting and installing the PiDS projected images diffusion screen, which weighs almost 1300lb.

Large Screen Displays replaced the 16-screen video wall with one screen: the PiDS projected images diffusion screen, measuring 8ft x14.5ft in HD format. The 3/8in PiDS glass screen was coated with retro-effect non-glare-coating enabling the screen to display a visible viewing cone of 180 degrees.

Large Screen Displays also manufactured the PiRM projected images rear-projection mirror mount. The PiRM houses the mirrors and utilizes the dual-stacked EZ Adjust 6-Axis Mount for the two Christie Roadrunner L6 projectors. With each Christie projector offering 5200 lumens, the 8ft x 14.5ft PiDS screen displays more than 100ft lamberts, creating a large screen that is illuminated daily at dusk and viewable from afar.
