Siano to make FLO-enabled chips
QUALCOMM has inked a deal with Siano to allow the semiconductor maker to design, manufacture and sell certain semiconductor chip products implementing FLO technology. The agreement paves the way for Siano to develop a multistandard MDTV receiver chip supporting FLO, in addition to other standards.
FLO technology is a key component of the MediaFLO air interface, designed to increase capacity and coverage and reduce the cost of delivering multimedia content to mobile handsets. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R) recently recognized FLO as an ITU-R-recommended technology for the broadcasting of multimedia and data applications for mobile reception on handheld devices. The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has already ratified multiple technical specifications of FLO.
Siano is the second company to participate in QUALCOMM’s FLO chip program, where companies can develop and market FLO chips using QUALCOMM’s technologies without having to pay royalties to the company.
