IBC2005 session to explore impact of analog switch-off

IBC2005 attendees will learn the initial results of an international study conducted by DigiTAG and the EBU to investigate several aspects of analog television switch-off.

The transition to digital terrestrial television and ultimate switch-off of analog broadcast service in Western Europe is not a unified, coordinated effort, but rather one that’s falling to individual nations to implement on their own timetables.

IBC2005 will offer broadcasters from around the world, and particularly European broadcasters, an opportunity to examine the analog switch-off experience to date and explore approaches for the future that will transition terrestrial television broadcasting to digital.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, attendees of this year’s IBC convention will learn the initial results of an international study conducted by DigiTAG and the EBU to investigate the switch-off during a special session entitled “Analogue Television Switch-Off — Avoiding Black Screens When The Analogue Signal Ends.”

The study addresses the best approaches to managing analog switch-off, the prospects for failure or success of each approach and different ways to launch digital terrestrial television service and how they impact cessation of analog transmission.

Daniel Sauvet-Goichon of TDF in France will chair the session with participation from Alexander Shulzycki of the EBU in Switzerland; Marnix Vlot of EICTA; Phil Laven of the EBU Technical Department in Switzerland; Pierre Helsen of the Digital-TV Kommissionen in Sweden; Indrek Lepp of Levira in Estonia; Sebastiano Trigila of Fondazione Ugo Bordoni in Italy; Alsex Mestre of Abertis in Spain; Andy Townend of SwitchCo in the UK; Bernd Heimermann of Deutsche TV-Platform in Germany and Marek Holvnski of TVP in Poland.
