The Sept. 12 meeting between college football powerhouses USC and Ohio State will be transmitted live from Columbus, Ohio to the Galen Center on the USC campus, where guests will view the game projected on Sony SXRD 4K technology.
The game will be shot using PACE Productions’ 3D image-capture systems, which feature Sony HDC-1500 cameras in stereoscopic rigs designed by Vince Pace. NEP Productions’ will provide its high-definition Supershooter mobile unit, which will use a Sony MVS-8000G switcher specially enabled to handle 3D stereo signals.
At the Galen Center, six Sony 4K projectors will display the game in 3D on three 40-foot screens.
“3D technology has already proven its value as a consumer draw for motion pictures,” said Alec Shapiro, senior vice president, sales and marketing, of Sony Electronics’ Broadcast and Production Systems. “Sports events are another ideal application of 3D. This provides USC students with an alternative site to watch the game ‘live’ in a fun, dynamic environment. Whether it’s a sports arena or a movie theater, 3D live production brings the action to fans who can’t attend in person.”
The Sony projectors’ 4K resolution is derived from a pixel matrix of more than 4,000 horizontal pixels, delivering more than four times the resolution of high-definition televisions used in home theater systems.
The projectors have a strong track record of success in live 3D theater presentations, delivering similar productions in 2007 for the NBA All-Star Game as well as an NBA regular season game and, most recently, the January 2009 college football FedEx Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game between the University of Florida and University of Oklahoma.
