Triveni Digital CTO Rich Chernock to Discuss ATSC Mobile DTV and Broadcast Service Quality Monitoring at SMPTE

PRINCETON, N.J. — Oct. 27, 2009 — Triveni Digital announced today that the company's CTO, Dr. Rich Chernock, will be presenting two papers at the SMPTE 2009 Annual Tech Conference & Expo. Speaking as part of a SMPTE session on mobile video architectures and services, Chernock will present a paper titled "Dealing With IP for Mobile in an MPEG World," examining how IP transport is being used in ATSC Mobile DTV to enable both streaming services and delivery of file-based content. Additionally, as part of the SMPTE session on station monitoring and control in the digital world, Chernock also will present "Broadcast Service Quality Monitoring Strategies," providing attendees with an overview of practical new design and operational considerations necessary for improving efficiency and maintaining station quality.

"Ensuring broadcast quality is critical to a profitable media business, regardless of the platform used to distribute program content," said Chernock. "An understanding of current industry standards and their impact on service delivery is valuable in achieving and maintaining high quality standards. Through these SMPTE presentations, I will address key concerns in maintaining this quality across different types of DTV delivery."

Since ATSC Mobile DTV standard relies on IP transport, Chernock will explore the IP-based model, its component elements, the mechanisms adopted to achieve "broadcast quality," and considerations for accommodating the differences in component interconnections. Because conventional DTV broadcasts must comply with complex ATSC and MPEG standards if they are to be viewable and of value to the broadcaster, Chernock will examine the challenges inherent in monitoring these signals and identify proactive strategies for guaranteeing the consistency and quality of these broadcasts.

Chernock is active in many of the ATSC and SCTE standards committees, particularly in the areas of metadata, monitoring, and data broadcast. Within ATSC he chairs a number of ad hoc committees whose work relates to metadata and transport issues. He is vice-chair of the Technology & Standards Group (TSG) and chairs the Non-Real-Time Services and Mobile/Handheld management layer activities within ATSC. He also is a participant in the SCTE HMS activity.

The SMPTE Annual Tech Conference & Expo is the premier annual event for technology, production, and operations in the motion imaging industry. The show brings together world-renowned technology thought-leaders from the media content business and serves as an industry-leading education and information resource to professionals working within motion picture studios, broadcast and cable networks, the production and post-production community, software companies, systems integrators, manufacturers, display technologies, and distribution providers.

The SMPTE Annual Tech Conference & Expo will be held at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel, Oct. 27-29, 2009. Chernock will present "Dealing With IP for Mobile in an MPEG World" on Thursday, Oct. 29, during the 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. session and "Broadcast Service Quality Monitoring Strategies" during the Oct. 29 afternoon session, which runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
