Triveni Digital CTO Richard Chernock to Address DTV Transport Basics and Quality Assurance at IEEE Broadcast Symposium

PRINCETON, N.J. — Sept. 2, 2008 — Triveni Digital, a subsidiary of LG Electronics Inc., today announced that company CTO Dr. Richard Chernock will be addressing DTV transport basics and DTV quality assurance strategies during two tutorials at the 58th Annual IEEE Broadcast Symposium in Alexandria, Va. "DTV Transport Basics," scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, will provide an in-depth overview of the basic transport technologies used for DTV and how the different transport elements work together. "Broadcast Video Quality Assurance," scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, will discuss the stream monitoring and troubleshooting strategies necessary to ensure that a quality product is being sent from the broadcast station.

"Digital television broadcasting is not a simple matter, and even broadcasters that have transitioned to digital can benefit from a refresher on the fundamental technologies underlying DTV,”" said Chernock. "Equipped with an understanding of DTV transport stream basics and the components critical to assuring the quality of broadcast video, broadcasters can approach the February deadline with confidence in their continued ability to deliver consistent and continuous programming to viewers."

Chernock's discussion of DTV transport basics will include a review of MPEG-2 transport; the enhancements and constraints added by the ATSC standards; and the signaling metadata (PSI and PSIP) that allows the receiver to discover, connect, and decode the information flow correctly to recreate television programming. The primary aim of this session is to provide broadcasters with a basic understanding of how these system elements work together. Chernock also will examine a typical station architecture to illustrate the functionality of core equipment with regard to their role in assembling and coordinating the transport stream and associated metadata.

In addressing the challenges of assuring a quality DTV broadcast, Chernock will introduce an architecture for centralized, system-wide quality assurance. Components of this architecture include monitoring, troubleshooting, consolidation and targeted communication of data, as well as configuration of all monitoring and analysis systems. He will review how, with all these components in place, broadcasters can maintain an integrated view of monitoring that allows them to find and correct service impairments quickly and thus improve service quality while reducing operations costs.

The IEEE Broadcast Symposium runs from Oct. 15–17 at the Westin Hotel in Alexandria, Va. More information about the conference is available at www.ieee.org.
