Harmonic's Ellipse Encoder Deployed in India's First Commercial HD/SD Teleport Facility

Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced that Broadcast Equipment India Pvt. Ltd. (BEI), has deployed Harmonic's Ellipse™ 1000 MPEG-2/MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) contribution encoder in the first commercial high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) teleport facility in India. The Ellipse 1000's advanced encoding capabilities provide broadcasters a smooth migration path to HDTV with the unique ability to simultaneously transmit MPEG-2 SD and MPEG-4 AVC SD/HD video to multiple transponders.

"With the expansion of HD television services in India, it is vital that we are prepared to handle the requirements of our broadcast customers to cost-effectively deliver high quality HD video services to their subscribers," said Mr. Satish Aggarwal, Managing Director of Broadcast Equipment India Pvt. Ltd. "The versatility, features and output quality of the Ellipse 1000 contribution encoder are indicative of Harmonic's video expertise."

Located at Sector-63 Noida (NCR Delhi) in India, BEI's commercial teleport facility has the capacity to uplink 16 services to four transponders for transmission over INSAT-2E for broadcasting in India and to the entire footprint of the INSAT-2E. The facility can also transmit the video signal to other parts of the world through BEI's collaboration with BT. BEI also provides optical fiber link access to the teleport facility from customer locations anywhere in India.

"By supporting compression standards ranging from MPEG-2 SD to MPEG-4 AVC HD and SD, the Ellipse 1000 enables a smooth MPEG migration path for BEI's broadcast customers as they make the transition to HDTV operations," said Shimon Shanor, Vice President of Strategic Markets Sales for Harmonic Inc. "The Ellipse 1000 encoder increases channel reliability while significantly reducing capital and operating expenses by way of advanced AVC and MPEG-2 compression technology packed in a small, low-power footprint, with simultaneous IP/ASI outputs, support for DVB-S/S2 and advanced multiplexing capabilities."

The Ellipse 1000 is part of Harmonic's complete portfolio of solutions selected by the leading broadcasters and service providers worldwide. Harmonic's Ellipse contribution encoders and ProView integrated receiver/decoders support fixed and mobile contribution including events and on-the-spot news coverage from digital satellite newsgathering (DSNG) vans.
