Canon SLR Still Camera Includes 1080p

April 2, 2009
In announcing its latest addition to its Rebel line of digital still cameras, Canon said the new EOS Rebel T1i Digital SLR will be the first entry-level product in the series to feature "Full HD" (aka 1080p) video capture, as well.

The T1i boasts a 15.1 megapixel CMOS sensor and imaging processor (dubbed "Digic 4"), comprising 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion and the ability to process 1080p video, Canon said. The unit is capable of continuous shooting at 3.4 fps for up to 170 large/fine JPEG images or up to nine RAW images in a single burst (at least while using a class 6 or higher SD or SDHC memory card).

The Rebel T1i features 16:9 video (720p) at 30 fps—or 1080p at 20 fps. A third option is recording 4:3 SD at 640x480 at 30 fps. (While recording video, the unit's rear LCD screen is letter-boxed with a semi-transparent border to match the pertinent aspect ratio.)

The Rebel T1i camera will record about 12 minutes of 1080p, and up to 18 minutes of 720p.
