MP3 Pioneer Karlheinz Brandenburg to Provide Keynote Address at SMPTE 2008

Professor Doctor Karlheinz Brandenburg, who sometimes wears the title "father of MP3," will deliver the keynote address at this year's SMPTE Tech Conference and Expo event.

Brandenburg is director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology in Ilmenau, Germany, and has been the driving force behind several of today's technologies, including MP3 and AAC MPEG audio.

Karlheinz Brandenburg Brandenburg will address attendees on Oct. 28 at the Hollywood conference, and will be presenting his views on the future of digital media, including 3D audio and video and media interactivity.

"Dr. Brandenburg is a true visionary whose work has transformed the media and entertainment industries in immeasurable ways," said Kimberly Maki, executive director of SMPTE and the SMPTE 2008 conference. "I am honored that he is delivering our keynote and am very much looking forward to hearing his thoughts about what lies ahead."

Brandenburg is the recipient of numerous awards stemming from his work in perceptual measurement techniques, wave field synthesis, audio encoding and psycho-acoustics. He was named in 2006 as one of the 120 most important inventors and masterminds in the field of electrical engineering by the International Electrotechnical Commission.

SMPTE 2008 will take place at Hollywood's Renaissance Hotel. The Conference itself is a three-day event (Oct. 28-30) and there's also a full-day pre-conference symposium on Oct. 27, which will address live television event coverage and filmmaking.

Mainstream conference presentations are planned to include the latest in display technology, 1080p infrastructure, IPTV and Internet video, digital newsgathering and 3D presentation in both theatre and home environments.
