BGAN plays important role in award-winning CNN IP newsgathering system

CNN, which was recognized last month with a Technology & Engineering Emmy Award for its IP-based newsgathering system, relied on and continues to use Inmarsat’s Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) satellite service for transmission of live and store-and-forward reports as part of its system, the company has announced. CNN won the accolade for development and implementation of an integrated and portable IP-based live edit and store-and-forward digital newsgathering system.

CNN also was honored with a Content Creation and Judges Prize award in September 2007 by the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) for its newsgathering system.

CNN’s IP-based newsgathering system includes:

  • BGAN terminals from Hughes Network Systems
  • Inmarsat satellite service from distributor Vizada
  • Streambox’ ACT-L3 newsgathering solution

These and components from other vendors were used for the system that went live during last year’s conflict in Lebanon. Using the system, CNN journalists were able to file hundreds of live reports via laptops connected to BGAN terminals, which they carried in backpacks into the conflict zones.
