TV panels drive LCD shipment growth in August, says DisplaySearch

TV panel shipments drove unit growth in large TFT LCDs in August, according to a monthly report from display market researcher DisplaySearch. Total panel shipments reached 36.3 million units and nearly 6 million square yards for the month.

Revenues from panels larger than 10in increased 8 percent month over month (M/M) and 46 percent year over year (Y/Y) to $6.7 billion in August, according to the “Monthly TFT LCD Shipment Database” report. The average unit price rose 3 percent M/M and 7 percent Y/Y with the average large panel size growing 1 percent M/M and 13 percent Y/Y.

It also found the average revenue per square foot of display area remained flat M/M, but fell 7 percent Y/Y to $125 in August. This decline was less than the historical average, indicating strong demand for large panels. Total sales of large and small panels for all suppliers tracked in the report increased 8 percent M/M and 45 percent Y/Y to $7.2 billion in August. Shipments of large and small panels increased 15 percent M/M and 65 percent Y/Y to 95.1 million units.

According to DisplaySearch, TV panels were responsible for 7.8 million units shipped, up 8 percent M/M and 54 percent Y/Y. LCD TV panels established a record high for the fourth consecutive month. Shipments of 32in and 37in units comprised 46.9 percent of TV panels. Shipments of 42in units comprised 10.4 percent compared to 8.3 percent for 40in units in August. Shipments of 46in and larger units comprised 7.9 percent compared to 3.3 percent in the prior year period.
