This Smithsburg, MD-based company was nominated by the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Program for the 2004 Entrepreneurial Award earlier this year in recognition of its role in Washington County's economic success. Specialized Communications has reinvented itself with its SignFlash dynamic digital signage solution. Known as a video equipment repair shop when it opened in 1985, Specialized Communications since has found its niche by focusing on broadcast video equipment: centralized media storage, video servers, and editing equipment. SignFlash, the company's product, is a small box that can drive standard video inputs from 13-inch monitors to large plasma screens. It allows users to blend text, still graphics, animation and video to create a repeating loop. The screen also can be divided into multiple zones, each of which can be programmed with a different sequence of images and text.
The company has a host of targets in terms of potential sales of SignFlash. One of its early customers, a local Hagerstown bank, exemplifies how this product can improve marketing and promotions for mid-sized businesses. The customer is broadcasting its own commercials on a continuous loop in its new branch office. Now the bank can afford to control an artistically stunning message and the content used to get that message across.
