Cox Communications in San Diego produced the Padres home opener from PETCO Park last week in high-definition and delivered it to its area customers over IP.
The game, the first of 104 that Cox Communications will produce in HD and deliver via IP this season, follows the successful use of the system from PETCO during the Aztec Invitational college baseball tournament sponsored by San Diego State University. Cox Communication is using Path 1’s Cx1000 video routers to telecast the HD signal from PETCO and other Western Division National League ballparks to its San Diego customers.
Cox Communications plans to telecast about 150 HD sporting events in 2004. Other events will include San Diego State University football and basketball, University of San Diego basketball, San Diego Gulls hockey, high school football championship games, the Miramar Air Show and the Holiday Bowl Parade.
Using Path 1 video routers for the telecasts allows Cox Communications to deliver voice, video and data over one fiber-optic network simultaneously. Cox Communications San Diego is the first cable television provider to use video-over-IP to distribute HD programming.
