Samsung unveils 1.8in 60GB hard drive

Samsung Electronics has introduced what it calls the world's first 1.8in 60GB hard drive in a compact form factor 5mm tall.

Previously, two disks were required to reach a 60GB storage capacity in a 1.8in drive, which increased the height and size of the drive.

The new 1.8in N-series from Samsung features 20GB, 30GB, 40GB and 60GB capacities. The 60GB model can store data equivalent to 60 135-minute movies, 1500 40MB music videos or 15,000 4MB MP3 music files. The N-series drives are available in both internal and external HDD type.

Samsung's N-series uses perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology to offer 60GB on a single disk in a 5mm form factor.

The 1.8in drives respond to the increasing demand for added capacity in smaller PC, mobile and consumer electronics applications. Samsung's N-series supports PATA as well as the new CE-ATA interface specifically designed for hard drives used in consumer electronics, MP3 players, portable media players, notebook PCs, UMPCs, car navigation systems, GPS and other digital consumer applications.

The 1.8in drives feature an ultra low power mobile SoC, a quiet and robust platform design, fast drive ready time, high efficiency hybrid latch system, shock sensor and optional free fall senor. All are equipped with a 4200-rpm spindle speed, 7.14ms average seek time and a 2MB data buffer.
