Samsung Debuts LED DLP 1080p Rear Projection

Samsung is unveiling its new LED light-sourced rear projection DLP HD monitor, replacing an UHP bulb with an LED component dubbed "PhlatLight." The South Korean maker will market the unit (model HL-S5679W) based on improved longevity, increased color gamut reproduction, faster turn-on time (seven seconds), and a quieter operation than light engine-based models.

PhlatLight is described as a single-chip DLP light engine (without a color wheel, per se) with red, green and blue light emitting diodes sequentially fired in order to produce smoother and more stable color reproduction, according to Samsung. It contends an LED engine ensures longer lamp life without degrading brightness.

The firm is also marketing the fact that the new engine is mercury-free, making it more environmentally friendly. The glossy black unit has 1920 x 1080p resolution, two 1080p HDMI inputs, a CableCARD slot, and integrated ATSC-NTSC tuners.
