Pinnacle Systems deploys networked servers for CANAL+

France's Group CANAL+ has selected Pinnacle Systems’ Palladium-based MediaStream 900 networked storage servers to provide reliable 24-hour delivery of four Premium CANAL+, one Sports+ and 14 pay-per-view Kiosk Cinema channels.

Pinnacle Systems is managing the entire project, which will completely overhaul the CANAL+ master-control infrastructure and replace it with centralized distribution operations that eliminate tape-based operations and enable the sharing of resources and content amongst channels.

Richard Scott, vice president with the EMEA division of Pinnacle Systems, said migrating traditional tape-based audio-visual infrastructures to modern networked digital workflows requires high levels of integration and flexibility.

The Pinnacle system will enable Group CANAL+ to easily expand its infrastructure in the future, particularly to support the addition of new channels. Pinnacle's MediaStream servers use special decoders from which every channel can be switched between SD and HD. In addition, Pinnacle's Palladium Exchange gateway allows the import and export of files from third parties to improve the transfer of resources between disparate parts of CANAL+.

The Pinnacle solution is comprised of the following:

-Pinnacle MediaStream 900 networked video servers to handle the demands of multicasting large numbers of channels. MediaStream 900 supports simultaneous playout of SD and HD video, as well as native MXF video.

-Pinnacle Palladium Store 1000, offering high-capacity, reliable, scalable shared storage designed specifically for the needs of television and post-production industries.

-Memory Long Term (MLT). Archive management software co-developed by Front PorchDIGITAL and StorageTek.

-Automation and asset-management solution from SGT to provide a global solution for the management of media throughout all stages of workflow, from ingest to broadcast.
