Olympus shows prototype omnidirectional camera

Olympus has developed a lens capable of shooting omnidirectional images. The company’s Future Creation Lab, in Japan, has developed a prototype CCD camera that incorporates the unique lens.

The futuristic lens was developed based on the “axisymmetric free-form-surface lens,” which was developed and announced by the laboratory last summer. It has a spherical shooting range, with horizontal and vertical view angles of 360 degrees and 180 degrees.

The new lens is made of glass and has a cylindrical shape measuring 3cm in diameter. The incident light is reflected inside the lens before entering the camera.
