New alliance to bring real-time, high-res Doppler weather radar to TV

WSI has formed a strategic alliance with the University of Oklahoma's Center for Analysis and Prediction (CAPS) Integrated Radar Data Services (IRaDS) group for delivery of real-time NEXRAD Level II data to television and media outlets.

Recently, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced the selection of the university’s CAPS as one of three top-tier sites in the United States to distribute real-time, high-resolution NEXRAD Doppler weather radar data.

This data, which until now has not been available outside of the government, represents the highest and most-precise resolution information produced by the nationwide radar network.

The partnership will give broadcast meteorologists access to more detailed and precise radar products to advise the public of severe and breaking weather events.

The partnership was born out of the Collaborative Radar Acquisition Field Test (CRAFT) project, a multi-year initiative to collect and disseminate NEXRAD Level II data during which WSI and other partners operated under a Sponsored Research Agreement with the university. The enhanced capability will deliver crucial information to a wider array of users.
