LCD Shipments Set Record in June

LCD is busting out all over. June's overall shipments of so-called "large-area" LCD panels (including HD sets) reached a record 46.7 million units globally — a jump of 24 percent over June 2008 — according to industry analyst DisplaySearch. LCD TV shipments, alone, also set a monthly record in June.

DisplaySearch predicts that overall LCD shipments will increase once again in July (but at a slower rate because the ongoing glass substrate shortage is limiting various panel makers' output).

DisplaySearch's latest data finds that LCD TV panels (mostly HD) had the highest year-to-year growth (57 percent) of the three major LCD categories — followed by computer laptop panels (19 percent) and computer monitor panels (12 percent). Both laptops (14.7 million) and LCD TV panel shipments (13.1 million) both achieved monthly record highs.

All three major LCD applications (TV, laptops and PC monitors) showed healthy growth in June over the previous month, despite the challenging economy.
