KMGH-TV employs 23GHz HD radios for Democratic convention coverage

KMGH-TV, the ABC affiliate in Denver, broadcast last month’s Democratic National Convention in HD using RF Central’s RF Extreme GL Series 23GHz fixed link.

The use of the 23GHz HD radio link was one of the first in the United States. The station used the unit with four ASI streams to transport HD video throughout its 72-hour around-the-clock coverage, which included both live and pretaped content.

According to station assistant chief engineer Dave Stromberg, KMGH-TV made the move because it wanted to replace its 30-year-old analog 23GHz radio link with a digital unit so it could send as many as four HD video packages back to the station directly from its cameras.

During its broadcast, KMGH-TV operated from a suite within the Pepsi Center Arena. Using four encoders that captured HD video, KMGH-TV transmitted the content to its studio about 4mi away.
