NASA has signed a multi-year agreement to allow all-HD network HDNet to televise space shuttle launches in HD through 2010.
The agreement covers full live launch and landing broadcast coverage of NASA's remaining space shuttle missions (at least 16) from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. HDNet will also broadcast NASA's unmanned rocket launches from Florida. HDNet is also providing to NASA, free of charge, an NTSC signal of all launch broadcasts for media networks not yet equipped to broadcast HDTV.
HDNet will provide the mobile facilities to cover the launches live in the 1080i HD format. This includes the use of 12 HD cameras per telecast, telephoto lenses, HD recording systems, HD production switchers, monitoring and a fiber-optic path required to send live signals from the launch pad to the Kennedy Space Center broadcast center several miles away.
The HDNet networks are available on cable and satellite TV systems that carry HD channels.
