BBC turns to Metra International for weather graphics makeover

The BBC has chosen Metra International Weatherscape XT software to upgrade its weather news presentation on all domestic and international television channels and the Web.

The BBC is the latest customer for the New Zealand-produced Weatherscape XT weather news software.

Australia’s Nine Network, CNBC stations in Europe, Asia, Dubai and Turkey, as well as television stations in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, are among the company’s other customers.

Developed by Metra, the commercial and international arm of Meteorological Service of New Zealand, Weatherscape XT uses high-end 3-D graphics and animation to illustrate the weather forecast in distinctive local landscapes.

Weatherscape XT reflects the latest technological advances in graphics presentation and combines it with leading-edge meteorological advances.

The software was developed by a Wellington-based team with a combination of experience in animation and meteorology. It allows broadcasters to present exciting and interesting weather news to viewers making the weather information compelling viewing.

Although the Weatherscape XT presentation software is from Metra, the forecast data will continue to be provided locally from the UK Meteorological Office. Software implementation and training is expected to be completed later in 2004.
