Baltic Channel streamlines production with Thomson tapeless environment

PBK, the first Baltic Channel, has implemented a tapeless production system using two Thomson Grass Valley K2 media servers equipped with 3TB of RAID storage for news and programming. The new production workflow provides a significant increase in production speed while reducing technical and human resources.

Material is being acquired on Panasonic P2 equipment and edited on several Thomson Grass Valley EDIUS NX and EDIUS SP-SDI workstations. The ability to use the same software on laptop editors in the field adds increased flexibility. The in-house workstations are connected to a LAN under the control of Thomson’s AppCenter Pro management software.

Based in Riga, Latvia, PBK broadcasts to all three Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) via satellite and cable systems, reaching an estimated 7 million viewers.

The purchase was coordinated by Thomson’s regional distributor Hannu Pro and is fully upgradeable to HD.

The complete solution also includes desktop facilities for news editors to browse facilities, edit MXF metadata, and perform rough cut editing to be finished on one of the EDIUS systems.
