Austrian broadcasters strike deal to develop DVB-H network in time for UEFA championships

Two major Austrian media companies agreed last week to collaborate on the deployment of DVB-H-based mobile TV services in the country by this summer’s UEFA EURO 2008 football (soccer) championships.

Media Broadcast, which holds a license to transmit DVB-H signals in Austria, and Österreichische Rundfunksender will cooperate on the development and operation of the nationwide DVB-H broadcasting network. The objective is to outfit all EURO 2008 venues before the beginning of the matches. This will allow the majority of the Austrian population to receive 15 domestic and international TV programs and four Austrian radio programs in digital quality.

The agreement governs the uses of the ORS broadcasting and network infrastructure for the network development and transmission of program signals.

The companies expect the DVB-H services to begin at the kickoff of EURO 2008 in the European Championship host cities of Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Klagenfurt.
