IAAF turns to Web for championship coverage

Even as local broadcasters and networks seek to cash in on emerging technologies to distribute content via cell phones and the Web, an international sports federation is attempting to turn the tables and use similar distribution avenues to circumvent the television and distribute its championships over the Internet.

For the first time ever, U.S. sports fans can watch 58 hours of live Webcast coverage of the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Athletics. Archived footage and broadcast highlights will also be featured.

The live Webcast of the competition takes place Aug. 6-14 in Helsinki, Finland. It will be available for $4.95.

The World Championships Sports Network (WCSN) in partnership with MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM) will provide the IAAF international feed for the Webcasts at its Web site.

WCSN will also provide a one-hour highlight show that will be telecast each day on the PAX cable network.
