Mirics continues to advance PCTV agenda with support for Japan's 1seg

Mirics Semiconductor is wading further into the widening stream of the netbook market sector by adding ISDB-T (1seg) support to its FlexiTV software mobile TV receiver and striking agreements with PCTV accessory providers Quincy Digital of Korea and Skycast of Brazil.

Japan's widespread adoption of 1seg, plus the booming netbook sector, makes this enhancement a natural addition to the DVB-T, DAB, T-DMB and FM standards Mirics already supports. For Japanese and Brazilian consumers, the tuner gives them an easily upgradeable device capable of receiving TV in other countries.

The announcement is the latest in a number of Mirics FlexiTV enhancements that includes mobile TV and radio applications for ARM and Intel Atom CPU platforms. These all are aimed at encouraging OEMs to embed mobile TV and radio functionality in ultraportable and low-power PC products such as netbooks and mobile internet devices. In a comment that counters accepted mobile TV wisdom, Mirics CEO Simon Atkinson voiced the opinion that “ISDB-T and T-DMB continue to represent the most significant market opportunities for mobile TV.”
