LG.Philips, Universal Display Develop Flexible Full-color Panel

LG.Philips LCD and Universal Display Corp. have developed a full-color flexible active matrix organic light emitting diode display. The organic EL panel with a 4-inch screen was unveiled at SID 2007 in Long Beach, Calif. this week.

The flexible display uses a-Si (amorphous silicon) technology, features 320x240 QVGA resolution and can reproduce 16.7 million colors. The panel has a thickness of 150 µm, which LG.Phillips said is about the size of a human hair. It uses a stainless metal foil substrate for durability and to protect against heat. Universal Display Corp., which holds patents for phosphorescent OLED technology, said that the metal foil allows for a rugged but conformable device.

"This display capitalizes on the strengths of OLED technology and its image quality is really something to behold," said Hyunhe Ha, executive vice president and the head of the Small & Medium Displays Business Unit at LG.Philips LCD. "Although we are still in the initial stages with this technology, we expect to make some exciting advances in the near future."
