MediaCorp Studios Upgrades To Fairlight CC-1 Platform

The ‘rock solid’ performance delivered by its existing Fairlight technology has inspired MediaCorp Studios, the production arm of Singapore’s leading media company, MediaCorp, to begin a process of upgrade to Fairlight’s new converged Crystal Core (CC-1) platform.

This process got underway at the end of 2008 when the facility installed a new three-bay Fairlight Constellation console running on the CC-1 platform. The console was specifically chosen for its ability to handle 5.1 audio projects – an area of business in which MediaCorp Studios has seen a significant increase thanks to MediaCorp’s move towards High Definition broadcasting.

Having had the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate Fairlight’s new CC-1 V2.0 software, MediaCorp Studios is so impressed with its rich feature set that is plans to move all of its other Fairlight systems over to the new platform throughout the course of 2009.

Mo Ju Li, MediaCorp’s Music and Sound Effects Director of Audio Post Production, says: “We have been using Fairlight technology since 2005 when we installed a Fairlight Constellation and three Station consoles – all with Pyxistrack Video and running on the older QDC platform. As these systems have always delivered a rock solid performance and have been well supported by Fairlight’s Singapore business partner, Mr. Chan Kheng Wah, we had no hesitation in choosing a new Constellation with CC-1 to tackle our growing 5.1 workload.”

Mo Ju Li adds that one of the biggest advantages of Fairlight technology is its ability to handle bi-directional file exchange between the CC-1 and QDC platforms. The systems are all networked for both audio and video via a Fairlight MediaLink-AV server application, which provides the audio gateway between the QDCs and the CC-1, as well as optimized video streaming to the Pyxis NLV video file playback machines in the studios.

“Being able to move between on generation of Fairlight technology to another is a major advantage as it provides us with seamless workflow between all of our studios, which in turn provides flexibility in studio scheduling. As a high throughput facility, we really value the productivity that the Fairlight systems allow us.”

As the production arm of MediaCorp, MediaCorp TV Singapore Pte Ltd is one of the largest TV content providers in Southeast Asia. It produces up to 1,800 hours of content annually for TV, broadband and mobile platforms. MediaCorp TV Singapore Pte Ltd also provides facilities and services for productions, artiste management and promotions, in addition to marketing and the distribution of productions in the regional and international markets.
