Starting September 24, two CBS-owned stations in Dallas—KTVT on channel 11 and KTXA on channel 21—will begin broadcasting news in HD.
Together, the sister stations transmit a total of six hours of local news each day, Monday through Friday. All these newscasts will switch to HD, starting with KTVT’s “CBS 11 News This Morning,” which airs weekday mornings from 5 to 7 a.m.
“This is an exciting time for our television stations,” said Steve Mauldin, the stations’ president and general manager, “but more importantly, we think it’s an exciting time for our viewers. Now, in addition to watching their favorite primetime shows, sports and special events in high definition, they can see their favorite local newscasts in HD, too.”
In addition to news, other selected programs will be broadcast in HD, including KTVT’s Sunday night half-hour sports show “The Score with Babe Laufenberg.”
The two stations join WFAA, channel 8—a Belo-owned ABC affiliate—the first station in the Dallas market to make the switch to HD news. WFAA began its high-def local broadcasts last February with the airing of its “News 8 Daybreak” show in addition to its nightly newscasts.
KTVT is an affiliate of its owner, CBS. KTXA is an independent. The stations said that conversion to high definition will require a new set design for each station and new graphics. More details are expected soon.
KTVT (CBS) and co-owned indie KTXA will air six hours of high-definition news daily beginning Sept. 24.
