When R&D engineers start fighting over a piece of test equipment, it’s fair to assume that the kit in question must be pretty special. Prism Sound’s dScope Series III audio analyzer has been causing exactly this reaction at the Marshall Amps R&D facility in Milton Keynes.
“Everyone in the department loves it,” says Marshall Amps’ lab technician Peter O’Neill. “It’s so versatile and gives such clear results that it’s become the one piece of equipment everyone wants. It’s very portable and easy to set up, so we can move it from bench to bench quickly and easily.” In fact, the company is so delighted with the results that they are considering adding a unit to the production line.
O’Neill recommended the dScope Series III to the R&D department after previous good experiences with the system while working at Solid State Logic. The dScope is a comprehensive measurement system for analog and digital audio generation and analysis. The audio test and measurement system comprises a Windows (XP and Vista) software application coupled with an external high-precision audio I/O processor for equipment-under-test (EUT) connections.
Among the projects the dScope is being used for is Marshall’s flagship amplifier, the JVM410H, a 100W all-valve guitar amp head with four channels, each with three different modes, that provides almost limitless variation in tone at the touch of a button. The amp is supplied with a six-button intelligent footswitch that allows switching between channels, master volumes and effects loops.
