Phoenix Sound opens in Pinewood

Phoenix Sound's new studios at Pinewood in Shepperton, U.K.

The bustling lot at Pinewood, the busy U.K. film and TV production complex, can now lay claim to the title of multimedia facility with the opening of the first music-recording studio on the grounds. Only three months after opening the high-end multi-track recording and mix facility in the formerly empty sound stage, Phoenix Sound recently completed its first orchestral recording dates, with several more booked in upcoming months.

The studio is heavily geared toward music-to-picture work for film and television. The 430sq ft control room was designed by Recording Architecture’s Roger D’Arcy, who specified a 5.1 surround system utilizing ATC SCM200ASL three-way monitors for left, center and right channels, SCM20ASL units for rear channels, and a pair of SCM 0.1/15 subs built into plinths.

The control room is equipped with a 72-channel Neve VR mixing desk, recording to Pro Tools H/D, RADAR and Sony 3348 digital multi-track formats. The studio can accommodate up to 30 musicians.

The studios will also host professional development courses for the film industry, as well as a teacher-training program.
