WHTM-TV goes wireless for car and boat show coverage

WHTM-TV, the ABC affiliate in Harrisburg, PA, used microwave technology from RF Central to provide coverage of the 2008 Pennsylvania Auto & Boat Show in January.

The station relied on an RF Central RMR two-way diversity digital rack-mount receiver stationed in the northeast corner of the show floor at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center. Receive antennas were hung nearly 10ft high.

The configuration allowed station DP Bryan Barr to roam the expansive hall freely as he used RF Central’s RFX-CMT-II HD upgradeable camera mount transmitter to shoot the live event in prime time.

During past shows, the station's cameras were tethered to cable to cover the exhibition floor. However, that approach meant station personnel spent a lot of time disconnecting and reconnecting the cameras to move to areas of the exhibit where they wanted to get shots, Barr said. Turning to a wireless system allowed the station to avoid the inconvenience of running cable on a 450,000sq-ft convention hall floor amid large crowds and about 300 cars.

Besides supplying the equipment, RF Central dispatched a technician for on-location assistance.
