VideoTele.com Lowers Bit Rates for DTV over xDSL

VideoTele.com Inc., a subsidiary of Tektronix, recently released multipass technology for its Astria content processor, a platform for delivering DTV over xDSL networks. The multipass processor allows service providers to improve bandwidth utilization on existing xDSL networks.

Astria operators can use the multipass processor to lower the overall bit rate of digital video streams while maintaining video quality. When integrated with the Astria's digital signal processing and MPEG-2 compression applications, multipass processing reduces the peak bit rate of a precompressed video source by more than 50 percent.

According to the company, the development will help drive down the cost of deploying video by expanding the number of customers that providers can serve. Lowering the bit rate of each video stream reduces bandwidth requirements on the backbone network, reducing service provider costs.
