United Kingdom DBSer BSkyB plans to soon begin offering more than 50 channels to its HD subs—notably to include what Sky says will be Europe's first dedicated 3D HD-stereoscopic channel in 2010. But Brits wanting to see three-dimensional images from 3D-produced content will only be able to do it by purchasing special "3D-Ready" HD sets, which, for the most part, have not yet been shipped to retailers.
The 3D venue, which Sky said will offer movies, sports and some special events entertainment, will originate from Sky's existing HD infrastructure and be available through "the current generation of Sky HD set-top boxes," according to the Rupert Murdoch firm.
"Importantly, the HD box that we're putting into customers' homes is a box that we can innovate from," said Sky CEO Jeremy Darroch in a statement. "So we can add more services [and] more value to the subscription over time."
In April, Sky aired a live musical performance by Keane from Abbey Road Studios via DBS to a Sky HD set-top box and home-model 3D Ready TV panel.
