TV shipments rise; 1080p set shipments reach 3.4 million, DisplaySearch says

TV shipment rose 18 percent in the third quarter of 2007 compared to the same quarter last year and 11 percent year over year to 50.6 million units, according to the latest figures from display market research firm DisplaySearch.

Revenues rose 17 percent quarter over quarter for the third quarter 2007 and 10 percent year over year, the research firm reported.

According to the company’s “Quarterly Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report,” several factors were responsible for the strong growth, including:

  • Rapid growth in Europe resulting from a rebound in sales following a disappointing third quarter in 2006;
  • Healthy technological growth in the developing world;
  • Enormous growth in 1080p set sales, which rose 70 percent quarter over quarter and 357 percent year over year to 3.4 million units;
  • Continued growth in shipments of flat-panel and larger televisions.
