When it comes to high-definition (HD) production, image quality is everything. Turner Studios recently covered its first Atlanta Hawks basketball game in high definition with a new all-digital truck that includes 14 Ikegami HDK 79 HD cameras, a Thomson Grass Valley Kalypso HD switcher, Canon lenses, and FOR-A color correctors to maintain a high-quality on-screen image.
Turner’s 52-foot mobile production unit will be equipped with two Canon DIGI SUPER 100xs and seven DIGI SUPER 86xs studio/field HD lenses. Each includes Shift-IS Image Stabilization. Five portable Canon HJ21x7.8B IRSD lenses, with the added control of a Digital Drive, will also be onboard.
For color correction, Bob McGee, director of Technical Operations for Turner Studios, said the FOR-A DCC-700 MU digital and the DCC-700H MU HD color corrector units, both on board the truck, help maintain a consistent look when working with a number of disparate digital sources.

The DIGI SUPER 100xs, or XJ100x9.3B IE-D provides a triple-digit zoom range from wide angle to telephoto. Canon’s image stabilizer technology is capable of eliminating vibrations at a frequency of up to 10 Hz.
The truck, which is also making extensive use of a Pinnacle Deko and Chyron iNFiNiT! for graphics production, will help support Turner Entertainment Networks’ new HD-only channel, TNT HD channel, which is set to debut May 14. The Ikegami HD cameras include both triax and fiber connectivity, making them suitable for a wide variety of production environments.
