Thomson switcher scores at FIFA World Cup Final

The action at the FIFA World Cup Finals in Yokohama, Japan was switched live with a ThomsonGrass Valley digital production switcher.

Broadcasters in hundreds of participating countries took the output from a Thomson Grass Valley DD35 switcher and passed it untouched on to their viewers, while others augmented the switcher’s live video with regional language voice-overs and custom graphics from their own studios. From 2D and 3D graphics and slow-motion replays to more than 23 camera views, everything was routed through DD35 switcher’s multiple M/E channels via a serial digital connection.

Bexel provided the switcher for the FIFA World Cup. Production Management TeleVision (PMTV), located in King of Prussia, PA., provided the crew.

Foundation For New XtenDD Switcher

The DD35 is foundation for the newest standard-definition Thomson Grass Valley production switcher, the XtenDD system. The DD35 series includes an advanced user interface of its control panels.

It also features LAN networking technology, high-performance chroma key capabilities, machine control, and macro key memory. Occupying seven rack units, it is designed to fit inside remote production trucks and onsite trailers such as those used in Japan for the FIFA World Cup. The XtenDD system is available with 2-, 3-, and 4 M/Es in the same frame.

The XtenDD offers up to four full-featured keyers, each with Dynachrome chroma key capability per M/E bank, up to eight downstream keyers (DSKs) in the program-preset bank and up to 90 inputs and 36 outputs with up to 20 auxiliary busses. Its four channels of digital effects deliver 3D planar effects and its four channels of RAM recorder provide 32 seconds of internal clip store.
