Thomson Grass Valley products and services are playing a major role in capturing and producing broadcast coverage of this year’s Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Literally hundreds of the company's cameras, switchers, editing systems, servers, routing switchers, and modular products will bring the Games home in both SD and HD resolutions.
The Systems Group of Thomson Broadcast & Media Solutions has installed five Grass Valley M-Series M-222D intelligent video digital recorders (iVDRs) in combination with a Grass Valley NewsEdit nonlinear editing system and a NewsQ Pro automated news playback system at CNBC headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, as part of a fully networked content-creation infrastructure dedicated to covering the Olympics this month.
Belgian-based TV facilities provider Alfacam will supply production services and 60 people for the AOB (the host broadcaster at the 2004 Olympics in Greece) with 14 OB-vans outfitted with Grass Valley multi-format equipment, one surround mobile audio van and one SNG HD satellite truck for NHK. Eight of these OB vans offer production capability in dualcast mode.
In Athens, Alfacam will cover the Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as most of the major sporting events. This makes Alfacam the largest TV facilities supplier in Athens, responsible for nearly one third of the Olympic TV coverage. In addition, the Opening and Closing ceremonies and the athletics will be entirely mixed in Dolby Surround 5.1, with 145 microphones from Alfacam's new surround mobile audio van OB 17.
In addition, Applied Electronics, the largest systems integrator in Canada, will supply Grass Valley equipment to a number of international broadcast networks, including SVT-Sweden, YLE-Finland, Pixcom-Canada, NRK-Norway, DR/TV2-Denmark and TV2-Norway.
