The NAB Show: Sony to Intro 4:2:2 HD ENG Recorder

Sony said its ENG line of XDCAM HD422 Professional Disc system products for professionals will add an HD field recorder (PDW-HR1) designed to complement its newest HD422 camcorder. The new unit, which offers 4:2:2 imaging, will continue supporting legacy formats such as DVCAM, MPEG IMX and 4:2:0 HD 24P.

The new ENG recorder includes an internal up/down converter, multiformat recording flexibility (720p/1080i), HD/SD conversion, and cross-conversion during playback between both formats. The added field unit also provides 24P (technically, 23.98) record/playback capability for 4:2:2 HD content as a standard feature—which Sony says makes its functionality as suitable for HDCAM production workflow as for ENG work, with the ability to record content acquired by Sony’s line of CineAlta cameras.

Users can record HD content to the dual-layer 50 GB version of Sony’s optical disc (PFD50DLA)—which can hold about 95 minutes at 50 Mbps or 200 minutes at 25 Mbps.

The HD422 will be on display at The NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 20–23. This year, Sony is moving from the South Hall to the rear of the Central Hall of the LVCC (similar to its positioning for CES back in January).
