Televisa delivers World Cup to Mexican viewers with help from Kahuna

Grupo Televisa, the largest media company in the Spanish-speaking world, is using the Snell & Wilcox Kahuna multiformat production switcher to enable simultaneous processing of SD and HD signals in the production of the Televisa network's standard and high-definition coverage of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

The Kahuna's ability to integrate SD and HD sources into productions without the need for external up- or downconverters allowed Televisa to leverage its existing SD equipment and newer HD technology to deliver broadcasts to viewers across Mexico.

Snell & Wilcox FormatFusion technology enables Kahuna operators to combine SD and HD camera feeds, graphics, handheld shots and archive footage directly into their HD productions. The Kahuna multiformat production switcher also features simultaneous HD and SD output capability from the same mainframe and control panel.

Televisa used two Kahuna systems, both with 4 M/E banks and two control panels. To date, Televisa has purchased four Kahunas from Insitel Mexicana, an authorized Snell & Wilcox integrator in Mexico.
