SR orders first HD outside broadcast unit

Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR), the public broadcaster based in Saarbrücken, Germany, has ordered a new multicamera HD outside broadcast truck from Grass Valley.

The truck will be used to provide coverage of cultural, entertainment and sporting events. SR will also use the truck as the production control for its studio 1 in Saarbrücken when HD facilities are required, giving the broadcaster a flexible way to migrate to HD production.

The new unit, to be built on a MAN 39.5ft truck base, will be capable of working with up to eight cameras. Five Grass Valley LDK6000 WorldCam multiformat cameras are being supplied as part of the contract. SR selected a 2 M/E Grass Valley Kayak HD production switcher, which occupies 8RU of space, a critical factor in the confines of a mid-size OB unit. The video infrastructure is based on Grass Valley GeckoFlex modular products and a Trinix router, together with NetCentral facility monitoring.
