IBS will describe how Europe’s first live 5.1 surround broadcast by a public service broadcaster was planned and implemented using a Studer D950 digital broadcast console at IBC2003. (Pictured: Studer D950 M2).

At IBC2003, the Institute of Broadcast Sound will conduct a session on implementing multichannel sound in a broadcast environment.

The session, to be held at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 14 in Room B, will be chaired by IBS Secretariat Malcolm Johnson MIBS. Three sections will comprise the multichannel section. The first section will describe how Europe’s first live 5.1 surround broadcast by a public service broadcaster was planned and implemented using a Studer D950 digital broadcast console identical to that used to broadcast the New Year’s Day concert from Vienna.

The second presentation, entitled “Practical aspects of metadata for multichannel broadcast sound” will be given by Jason Power, market development manager, and Andrea Borgato, consultant for multichannel audio, of Dolby Laboratories, U.K.

For the third presentation, Bill Whiston, senior sound supervisor, BBC TV OBs, U.K., will be joined by Andrea Borgato to describe the BBC/Dolby experimental surround sound coverage of tennis from Wimbledon.
