SMPTE to Celebrate 90th Anniversary

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is preparing to celebrate the organization's 90th anniversary at the annual Technical Conference and Exhibition being held in October in Hollywood, Calif.

The anniversary will be celebrated on the first day of the conference, Oct. 18, with a gala celebration that evening at a top Hollywood studio.

"The Society was founded 90 years ago to answer the need to standardize a fledgling and very disorganized technology, and the need for SMPTE's involvement in these technologies has increased exponentially," said SMPTE President Edward Hobson. "Today, SMPTE is involved in standardization of high definition television, digital cinema, compression systems and content protection."

The conference will also feature numerous presentations on technological changes affecting the television and film industry, including papers on IP video, the latest advances in high definition television, the digital intermediate, the reemergence of 3D motion pictures and film archiving.

The conference is scheduled from Oct. 18-21 at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood, Calif. Attendees can register here.
