Panasonic, one of the largest makers of HD products globally, has begun the process of buying Sanyo, which will grow Panasonic (until recently known formally as Matsushita) into a potential CE manufacturing juggernaut at a particularly rough time for the world economy.
Panasonic first showed an interest in taking over Sanyo several weeks ago. Sanyo has been struggling recently with the production of a different type of panels—solar—as part of its strategy to go green.
Panasonic makes Panasonic- and Viera-brand HD sets and Blu-ray Disc players under its own name and the Diga brand. The takeover was reported to have cost Panasonic about $9 billion.
