New FCC bureau to manage response to emergencies

The FCC’s newly created Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau opened for business Sept. 26.

The bureau will promote “robust, reliable and resilient” communications services during emergencies. It is designed to provide an organizational structure for addressing public safety, homeland security, and emergency management and preparedness. Responsibility for emergency response previously dispersed among various FCC bureaus and offices will be consolidated in the new bureau.

The Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau is organized into three divisions:

• Policy Division;
• Public Communications Outreach & Operations Division; and
• Communications Systems Analysis Division.
