Neumann expands digital microphone line

Solution-D, the designation Neumann gives to its digital microphones, began with the model D-01, a studio model. Now, the Berlin-based maker of prestigious mics is bringing digital capability to its smaller KM family of products.

With the new digital models KM 183 D, KM 184 D and KM 185 D, three different directional characteristics are being offered initially; four others will follow in 2007. The modular construction of the new microphones permits the passive omnidirectional, cardioid and supercardioid capsules to be combined with the KM D output stage, Neumann said.

In the smaller microphones, Neumann's A/D converter from the D-01 is located immediately next to the capsule. With a dynamic range far exceeding that of the capsule, the converter ensures that the capsule signal has no coloration and is delivered to the recording device with transparency.

If required, the DSP functions integrated into the microphone can be configured and controlled remotely via the DMI-2 digital microphone interface and the RCS remote control software. These functions include gain setting, a compressor/limiter with a supplementary de-esser function, and a peak limiter.

All standard sampling frequencies from 44.1kHz to 192kHz are supported. In addition to the DMI-2 interface, Neumann offers connection kits to permit direct connection of KM microphones directly to S/PDIF and AES/EBU interfaces.

Although it was undisclosed, Neumann said it will offer two starter sets “at a very attractive price.” The kits include a KM 184 D microphone and a connection kit for an S/PDIF or AES/EBU connection. Since the A/D converter is already integrated into the digital Neumann system, a preamp is not required.
