NBA Game Beamed to Dallas Theater in 3-D HD

Tuesday night (March 25), FSN (Fox Sports Network) Southwest and the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA teamed up with digital 3D production firm Pace to produce what Mavericks’ owner (and HDNet founder) Mark Cuban is calling the first-ever NBA regular-season game to be covered live with Pace Fusion 3D cameras (and only the third live sports event ever presented in the format).

This week’s game against the Los Angeles Clippers was to be beamed from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, across town (via satellite) to the Magnolia Theatre (also owned by Cuban) to an invitation-only audience.

As in previous Pace demos (including one in Las Vegas during last year’s NAB), viewers were required to wear 3-D glasses to see images gleaned from the Sony SXRD 3D projection system on an 18-by-42-foot screen. FSN Southwest used the Pace/Cameron Fusion system to capture images using two HD cameras that capture left- and right-eye imagery separately—and therefore create a single three-dimensional effect for both eyes.

Specifically, Sony’s CineAlta 4K digital cinema projectors were used, with two SRX-R110 4K projectors that were double-stacked.
