Akamai Technologies and MLB Advanced Media announced the selection of Akamai for Major League Baseball content distribution and streaming of audio and video.
Under the multi-year agreement, Akamai will provide content delivery of MLB.com and Major League Baseball’s 30 team Web sites including streaming of Major League Baseball live and on-demand video and audio game-casts. The integration with Akamai began last month, and will be fully operational by opening day.
Akamai’s support of multiple media formats enables MLBAM to offer fans a choice of media players. MLB.com offers live audio broadcasts of all games, and in 2003, began selling live video Webcasts for roughly half the price of regular-season games, depending on local-market blackout restrictions. MLB.com had more than half a million paid subscribers last year, including more than 150,000 for its live video service.
