Luff to discuss the implementation of file-based workflow changes

Television technology consultant and Broadcast Engineering writer John Luff will discuss the practical consequences, including the impact on TV station personnel, of transitioning from traditional tape-based video workflows to new IT-centric approaches during the SBE/Ennes Workshop April 12 at NAB2008 in Las Vegas.

Luff’s presentation, “Implementing Workflow Changes,” will focus on the preplanning and execution of a plan to transition to a file-based workflow. According to Luff, such transitions don’t simply involve tangible hardware and software but must also take into account the human side of the equation. Specifically, Luff will examine how best to plan and execute the transition in a non-threatening manner that meets the needs of those working for an organization.

According to Luff, besides the benefit of fostering an environment in which the transition is welcomed and supported, taking such an inclusive approach will help organizations to identify all aspects of their operation so no piece is accidentally omitted and there’s a universal understanding among personnel about the transition.

During his presentation, Luff will discuss how to set up a team to execute the transition, the proper role for internal and external consultants, training considerations and who should spearhead the process.

Luff also will examine where a broadcaster’s physical tape-based facility and the planned file-based workflow are on a fundamental collision course and strategies to resolve those conflicts. Perhaps one of the biggest questions Luff’s presentation will explore is whether a facility that has transitioned to a file-based workflow is an IT professional’s facility or a broadcast engineer’s plant.

Luff’s presentation is part of a daylong SBE/Ennes conference program focused on file-based workflows April 12 from 8 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., in the Las Vegas Convention Center, rooms S219/S220. Luff is scheduled to speak at 1:30 p.m.
