LG Picks Conexant Demod, Tuner for 'World's First' DVB-S2 Set-Top Box

I've written about the new DVB-S2 standard for digital satellite transmission. The new standard combines advanced channel coding and modulation techniques to offer up to a 35 percent improvement in data bandwidth over the older DVB-S standard. Last week, Conexant Systems, Inc. announced that LG Electronics had selected Conexant's CX24126 satellite set-top box DVB-S2 demodulator and CX24118 direct down conversion 8PSK tuner for use in their Model H20 HDTV receiver. According to Conexant, the H20 is the world's first set-top box based on DVB-S2.

Jeff Crosby, vice president and general manager of Conexant's Broadband Media Processing business, said, "We are pleased that our 'world's first' DVB-S2 chip has enabled LG Electronics to achieve a similar industry milestone with their new H20 set-top box." He added that chips based on advanced modulation, coding and compression technologies were critical to completing the transition to new digital television services. "This is a key area of focus for Conexant, and we will continue to develop innovative, cost-effective chips for this growing market segment."

Dr. Choon Lee, director of LG Electronics' DTV Lab, explained that Conexant was a leader in front-end set-top box silicon solutions and is the only chip manufacturer to offer a fully proven and extensively tested DVB-S2 demodulator. He said, "The early availability of their standards-compliant solution allowed us to be the first in the world to bring an advanced high-definition-based set-top box to market."
